Sacred Paws, Ela Orleans and Current Affairs at Mono, Glasgow, 27 January 2017

Summer comes to Glasgow on a chilly January night. Mono's packed and there's a buzz in the air. Current Affairs (formerly Seconds) have a touch of the goff about them, in look and sound (think Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, The Smiths, Magazine) but the determined grind of their rhythm section gets the blood going and they've melodies in spades. It's a compelling start to a flawless evening of live music.

Instead of taking us down the infernal paths she has followed of late, Ela Orleans opts to take a detour through especially hypnotic deep cuts from her back catalogue, bringing to mind a more ethereal Suicide and hints of later Coil at points. It's no mystery why Orleans has become a key figure in the Glasgow scene in recent years, the journeys she takes you on are never anything less than transportive, even when the set is deliberately more low-key than usual.

They crowd are really raring to go now and they aren't disappointed. Two versions of Sacred Paws play tonight, alternately -the core guitar, drums and dual vocals of Rachel Aggs and Eilidh Rodgers, and a special five-piece version with additional guitar, bass and keyboards (provided by Lewis Cook of Happy Meals). Both are brilliant. You can hear their previous band Golden Grrrls in the sound, with a heavy dash of The Raincoats (who they played a few gigs with last year) and West African highlife. It's a heady mix, and just what we all need right now. What happens in Mono tonight is a coming together of people, and their respective genders, sexualities, colours, ages and countries of origin are inconsequential. They're together, in this amazingly uplifting music. This gig is the anti-Trump, the anti-May, the anti-Brexit. There's no anger in it, grins abound. It's how things should be all the time. And it proves it's possible. And it's pretty easy, at that. A night worth remembering, in more ways than one.

Dispatch: Field Music, Glasgow School of Art

Since 2004, Field Music have been busy lads - the core of the brothers Brewis (David and Peter) has produced five albums, a soundtrack, a covers album, a dozen singles and two albums with side projects apiece. As soon as you hear a new Field Music song, you know it's them, but that doesn't mean they've become stale or dull - far from it, in fact, as Sunday's gig at the Art School proved. Purveyors of complexly structured artpop they may be but this was no chin-stroking, egg-headed exercise in pomposity. This was funky and sweaty, if taut and intelligent with it. The brothers and their assembled touring band played a broad selection from their back catalogue, numerous cuts from their excellent new album Commontime included, and exuded a quiet confidence looking like they were having a lot of fun - almost as much as the (rather vocal) audience. The band is doing the rounds now, miss them at your peril.

New Casual Sex video: 'Nothing on Earth'

The video for the brilliant Casual Sex's Nothing on Earth has just been unveiled. The track finds them channeling late-70s New York Mutant Disco to the backdrop of a nocturnal Glasgow. The song is taken from their forthcoming The Bastard Beat EP , to be released on We Can Still Picnic and launched on 22 November at Nice'N'Sleazy. Check. It. Out.

The Pastels - 'Check My Heart'

We've been a little bit slow to post this so no doubt many of you have heard it already, but we couldn't risk this wonderful slice of sun-infused hard pop escaping anyone's attention. The Pastels are one of Blasted's favourite bands and we can barely contain our excitement at the prospect of hearing new album Slow Summits, due out on Domino Records on 27 May. There's a taster in the form of the audio for first single, Check My Heart, below. Maybe the summer's on its way after all.

The Pastels new single "Check My Heart" is out April 08, 2013, click here to order: http://smarturl.it/checkmyheart The singles appears on the new album (first album in 15 years!) Freitags #9

Glasgow's Green Door Studios is one of the country's most exciting recording studios, and they're celebrating their 5th birthday in style at Nice'N'Sleazy tonight! The party consists of a typically eclectic line-up of bands and DJs, including the malevolent disco of Golden Teacher and the marvellously melodic (or should that be melodically marvellous?) post-punk of POST. This special event kicks off at from 20.00 and continues until the wee small hours - entry is only £1 and you get a free CD of recordings made in 2012. If you're in the area, there's no excuse.

Golden Teacher started life as a studio collaboration between Glasgow's noise punk trio, Ultimate Thrush and Glasgow's all analogue house duo, Silk Cut. The results of their collaboration turned the ears of all who heard them, not least Twitch who after one listen asked if he could release the project on Optimo Music label.

In a city that's spoilt when it comes to art galleries, Edinburgh's Fruitmarket continues to challenge and provoke. A new exhibition of theirs is always cause for investigation (and often celebration), and Massimo Bartolini certainly looks to be no exception. The exhibition is free, running from today until 14 April, and there will be a series of talks and events relating to it, including a talk from the artist himself.

Back to Glasgow with a special event happening at The Old Hardresser's on Wednesday (6 February). Nite Flights is "An evening of video and performance curated by Glasgow based artist Michelle Hannah, taking theme from the fractured disco of Scott Walker's Nite Flights [and] features work by local and national artists". Regular readers know how much we love the artist otherwise known as Noel Scott Engel, so to say we're intrigued would be something of an understatement. It's free and runs from 20.00 'til midnight.

Blasted regulars will also know how much we love the lexically dexterous writer, filmmaker, and contrarian Jonathan Meades. So, we were understandably very happy to see him return to our TV screens this week with a new film entitled - in typically drôle manner - The Joy of Essex. It's on the iPlayer now - bear in mind there's only four days left to get your fix. His excellent collection of essays, articles and scripts, Museum Without Walls, is available on Unbound now.
